Bishop seeks statutory age for governors
The Catholic Bishop of Awka, Most Revd. Paulinus Ezeokafor, has called for the pegging of the age of Nigerian governors at 45 to 55 years.
The bishop said this while delivering the Good Friday homily at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka.
He said people within the age bracket he prescribed were in their prime and had so much mental and physical energy to deliver.
Ezeokafor, who praised the outgoing Governor of Anambra State for a good performance, said Governor Peter Obi was able to perform because he falls within the age bracket of 45 to 55 years.
The bishop warned that the state would not tolerate indolent leadership and vowed to personally lead a protest against any government that failed to perform.
He said whoever aspired to succeed Obi must first sit down and take stock of the mega achievements of Obi and be aware that Anambra people would no longer accept non-performers as governors.
He predicted that with the pace set by the governor, Anambra has become a state to reckon with and that in the next 10 to 20 years, schools returned to churches would have been sufficiently rebuilt to assume their positions before the take-over.
The cleric said he deliberately took time to talk on the next administration in Anambra State because many aspirants had entered the field, sharing money and gifts and warned Christians to beware of those who share gifts only to steal public funds when they get into office.
While criticising Obi for being frugal with public funds, the bishop said however that the governor’s style had helped to save money to execute capital projects.
